Effect of human chorionic gonadotrophin on plasma and urine testosterone in boys with delayed puberty. The plasma testosterone and/or urine testosterone levels after 1500 units of human chorionic gonadotrophin (HCG) for four days have been measured in 29 male children (aged 8 years-18 years 7 months) with clinical evidence of delayed puberty. Children with constitutional delayed puberty, and all but 3 children with cryptorchidism, had similar mean incremental rises in testosterone. 3 of 4 children with Prader-Labhart-Willi syndrome had a poor urine testosterone response to HCG. Children with testicular atrophy failed to respond to HCG and

X-linked syndrome of pubertal failure

Five boys with familial cytomegalic adrenocortical hypoplasia have been followed up for an average of 19 years. Despite treatment with replacement corticosteroids, all 5 failed to show a spontaneous onset of puberty and, when assessed at ages 13 to 19 years, all had both sexual infantilism and skeletal immaturity. Hypogonadism was confirmed by low levels of plasma testosterone, and pituitary re...

Cleft palate and gonadotrophin deficiency.

A boy who had previously had a cleft lip and palate repaired and bilateral orchiopexies presented at 16 years of age with delayed puberty. Isolated gonadotrophin deficiency and testicular hyporesponsiveness to human chorionic gonadotrophin were found. The possibility of bilateral cryptorchidism due to gonadotrophin deficiency should be considered in boys with either cleft lip or palate, or both.

Testicular function after combination chemotherapy in childhood for acute lymphoblastic leukaemia.

We have assessed testicular function with luteinising hormone-releasing hormone (LH-RH) and human chorionic gonadotrophin stimulation tests in 44 boys previously treated with, or currently receiving, chemotherapy for acute lymphoblastic leukaemia (ALL). At the same time a testicular biopsy was performed in each boy and the morphology was studied. Histologically the chemotherapy appeared to dama...

CLINICAL STUDY The human chorionic gonadotropin test is more powerful than the gonadotropin-releasing hormone agonist test to discriminate male isolated hypogonadotropic hypogonadism from constitutional delayed puberty

Objective: The effectiveness of biological investigations aiming at discriminating isolated hypogonadotropic hypogonadism (IHH) from constitutional delayed puberty (CDP) in male patients is still controversial. We revisited the diagnostic power of the basal serum testosterone level, the Triptorelin test and the human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG) test in a cohort of 33 boys with delayed puberty....

HCG stimulation test in children with abnormal sexual development.

Plasma testosterone was estimated by radioimmunoassay in 60 children with disorders of sexual development before and after stimulation with human chorionic gonadotrophin (HCG). In 21 children the testosterone levels after 3 and 5 daily injections of 1000 units HCG were compared and good correlation was found between the paired results (r =0-93), suggesting that the 5-day HCG test has no advanta...
